In Sokoto sate about sixty five different cases of defilements, rape and sodomy have been reported within the last two months.

The state Commissioner for Women and Children Affair, Hajia Kulu Sifawa who gave this indication while briefing newsmen in her office in Sokoto,
added that the increase in cases of rape, defilement and sodomy could be attributed to the current lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the commissioner, the ministry in collaboration with civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations would do everything possible to make sure that the victims of rape, defilements and sodomy get justice.

Hajiya Kulu Sifawa added that to cushion the effect of the coronavirus pandemic, the ministry has provided palliatives for those in internally displaced persons (IDPs)camps in Wamakko local government, Gandi in Rabah Local Government area as well as Sabon Birni.

She proffered stiffer penalty for rapists, stressing that the increasing rate of rape cases in the country could also be blamed high rate of moral decadence.

The commissioner, therefore, enjoined parents to rise up to their responsibility and inculcate good morals and values in their children.
