The Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) has fabricated infrared thermometer and also solar powered sensor hand sanitiser to be presented to the state Government.

The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University, Prof. Shehu Alhaji-Musa disclosed this on Monday while launching the invented facilities in Kano.

According to the University’s VC, the development was part of the institution’s efforts to compliment the Federal and Kano government’s in fighting against the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Alhaji-Musa, while unveiling the equipment said “The contribution of the university was galvanized from three faculties of the university, which include Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology and Education.

“It is gratifying to launch the following on behalf of the university.

“Solar Powered Infrared Temperature Measuring Devices, Solar Powered Sensor Sanitizing Machines, both produced by the Faculty of Engineering.

“Hand Sanitizers that meet up the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard, produced by the Department of Chemistry.

-Awareness Banners on COVID-19 produced by the Department of Technical and Vocational Education (TVET).”

He also explained that the equipment are produced to address the issue of social distancing protocol for fighting against the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, the equipment are suitable for usage in hospitals, schools, worshiping places, markets and supermarkets.

Speaking at the event, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Dr Bala Abdullahi who described how the machines operate, said that the solar powered infrared thermometer is safer for use than the formal machine..

Also the solar powered sanitizer is safer for use as it operates using a sensor to dispense the sanitizer unlike the one in a container that goes from one hand to the other.

He also announced that the University has organised training on how to use the devices.

Twenty pieces of each of the implements were produced and are to be donated to the Kano state government while the VC called on the government and individuals to join in the development of the technology by investing in the production.
